Simon Griffiths

Malaysian Open and Honda Classic

A poor start to the tipping campaign! A 7pt loss.... oh well, onwards and upwards!

Malaysian Open this week.... could look at Wentworth's Simon Griffiths, but this comes very early in the season and this is a short, tight course where the scoring could go low. I think tight courses suit Si but he has not played much and other players come into the event in good form. Si also tends to play well at the end of a run of events. He may 'need the run' to use a horse racing expression.

My Tour Insider suggests K J Choi, he said "K J Choi to win in Malaysia - hitting it longer and more accurate with his new Ping G15 irons including the new Ping G15 wedges." I like Jaidee but think he is too short at 9/1. K J at 16/1 makes more appeal. So he will be the 1st selection.

In America this week is the Honda Classic. Played on a Nicklaus course so will, as all of his courses, favour left to right hitters. It is nearly always windy and with water on 16 out of 18 holes it really is a ball strikers course. Scoring tends to be high relative to par.

Step forward Robert Allenby. Great ball striker and got the taste of winning in Australia and South Africa over the winter. Not the best price ever at 16/1 but surely he won't let me down 2 weeks in a row! Ernie Els has course form and is a great wind player. He, like Allenby will definitely be in the mix on Sunday if he can get the putter anywhere near lukewarm. They both have exceptional ball striking stats. Interesting alternatives are Westwood and Mcilroy, but they are both short enough prices for Europeans in the States and both seem to find in tough to get over the finishing line considering how many chances they have had in the last 12 months. (Bit critical!)

So, here they are:

2pts ew K J Choi 16/1 Malaysian Open

1.5pts ew Robert Allenby 16/1 Honda Classic

1pt ew Ernie Els 25/1 Honda Classic
