Turkish Airlines Open and The McGladrey Classic

Last Week

I came to Spain two days and since then I have found and moved into an apartment and played twice at Valderrama, hence the delay in the picks. As they are coming out late I will give just the selections so you have time to get on.

Last week it was gutting to see our main bet withdraw after one round with a bad back. Matsuyama cost us 4 points but unfortunately that’s part of the game. Canizares looked to be in good position at Stage 2 of Q School after a second round 65, -6. There was no play on day three as high winds came in making the course unplayable. When he went back out he shot 80 and our bet died along with his European Tour ambitions for next year.

Garcia saved the day when he finally got the putter going in round 4 in China. A final round 63 saw him finish in outright fourth. It had been a frustrating first three days. He created a lot of chances but failed to convert. When scoring goes as deep as it did you have to make your fair share to keep up.

Dustin Johnson was very impressive. Three double bogies and he still got to 24 under. Like horses that have a tendency to win first time out or on a return from an extended break, DJ is worth noting down on the same list. He won his first tournament last year, the Hyundai, and now his first this season.

This Week

Turkish Airlines Open

This week there is not a lot that excites me. Woods looks a worthy favourite in Turkey and is one of few with course experience. Casey has an impressive record on Montgomerie designed courses and is in good form but nothing really captures my attention. If I was going to have a bet I would maybe back Schwartzel but at 18/1 he is a win only price and he doesn’t win enough to make that play. He won last time out in China which gives him some appeal and tends to play some great stuff this time of year. Nothing in this for me.

The McGladrey Classic

This basically looks like it is going to be a putting tournament. It is worth noting local residents like Kuchar and English. Webb Simpson is in great form and has played well in this before, finishing 12th in 2010 and 2nd in 2011. I like his chances but the one I am going to back is Charles Howell III. Everyone raves about his ball striking but the last couple of seasons it has been his putter and short game that have put dinner on his families table. He is actually a pretty wayward driver of the ball. This sets up perfectly for him and he has a great record on par 70’s. He has finished 6-32-7 here and has finished 5-7 on his last two starts. Definitely worth a play at 28/1.

The McGladrey Classic

1.25 points each way Charles Howell @ 28/1 (-2.5 points)

Special Bet

0.5 point each way double Charles Howell @ 28/1 and Charl Schwartzel @ 18/1 (-1 point)

2013 running total = + 7.78 points. This week’s investment 3.5 points. This weeks P&L = -3.5 points

2012 total +150.36 points
2011 total +370.78 points
2010 total +189.33 points

My advice comes with a point system to rate the strength of a tip. A 1 point bet means placing your usual stake, so if you would consider your normal bet being £10 then a point signifies £10.
