Golf Betting Tips

WGC Bridgestone Invitational, Reno-Tahoe Open, Finish Challenge

Last Week’s Picks.

0.5 pt double Bernhard Langer in Senior Open @ 11/1 and Caroline Masson @ 16/1 in ISPS Handa Ladies Euro Masters (+8.38 pts) - Close to landing a juicy double. Both Masson and Langer lead the whole week. Masson got beaten by an exceptional final round from Webb. If Masson had won it would have been the most painful 10 minutes of golf viewing imaginable watching Langer play the last. The German had been immaculate for 71 holes only to record a clumsy double bogey on the 72nd. He then went on to lose the playoff. Still, an each way double up which covered the week.

1pt each way Chris Kirk @ 55/1 - Kirk had an exact replica of his previous week. Got himself in the mix through two good rounds and then found nothing. The birdies keep drying up on the weekend.

1pt each way Charley Hoffman @ 55/1 - Was tied leader after 8 holes of round 3 and looking good before hitting a 7 iron into the water on a par 3 and making 5. He got back into the mix early in the final round before visiting the water again on a par 3 and recording another 5. Disappointing.

0.5 pts each way Daniel Gaunt @ 125/1 - Played well for a couple of rounds but finished middle of the pack.

3 pts Fred Couples @ 6/1 - Poor opening round, got back into the event over the next few days but never threatened.

Snedeker won the Canadian Open. His third round 63 was impressive and the favourite cruised in from there. It helped that he comfortably lead the field in putting. A few people challenged before just falling away. The most disappointing was Dustin Johnson. He has so much ability and is one of the few players that can rip any golf course up but the shot he hit on 17 was very worrying. After making eagle on 16 to get within one he hit it so far right on 17. The resulting triple meant the tournament was Snedeker’s. It makes you wonder if Dustin has anything to go to under pressure. On a tight course could he get it done going flat out on every shot. He can win on wide courses like Kapalua, tight courses he may well be best avoided.

This Week’s Picks.

WGC Bridgestone Invitational:

0.75 points each way Billy Horschel @ 80/1 - Snuck back out to a nice price after a couple of average weeks. Firestone should suit him perfectly. It’s a tough course tee to green, which is the test he thrives on. He ranks 12th in total driving, 26th in greens in regulation and 25th in putting. 80/1 looks fairly big.

0.5 points each way Harris English @ 150/1 - Two top 15’s and a win in his last 5 starts makes the price look huge. 12th in birdies, 57th in greens and 28th in putting sets him up well for Firestone.

0.75 points each way Bill Haas @ 66/1 - Ranks 9th in greens and 4th in par 4 scoring which makes him a player here. He has a win, two tops 10’s and two missed cuts in his last 5. The missed cuts were in the US and British Opens.

Reno-Tahoe Open

0.75 points each way Kevin Stadler @ 50/1
- Modified Stableford Format should suit Stadler who makes loads of birdies (rank 17th) and eagles (rank 10th) but makes too many mistakes to make the most of his clear ability. His putting is the key, ranks 162nd so this has to improve but he is a streaky player. The poor putting stat is linked to being ranked 10th in greens in regulation so is not as bad as it first looks. Has a 5th and 11th place finish here in last 3 years.

Finnish Challenge

1 point each way Brandon Stone @ 50/1 - Regular readers will be well aware of the hype I blew up about Stone. His amateur and college career etc. He paid me back with a top 10 in Germany first time out. However, in France, Scotland and Ireland one big number has killed him. He has actually played some great stuff but trebles and quads are tough to come back from. To use a horse racing term, he is down in class this week as he debuts on the Challenge Tour. I am not saying it is going to be much easier, the Challenge Tour is a very competitive breeding ground with no shortage of classy players. But 50/1 is fair on Stone who can impress again this week.

My advice comes with a point system to rate the strength of a tip. A 1 point bet means placing your usual stake, so if you would consider your normal bet being £10 then a point signifies £10.
