Dubai Desert Classic and WM Phoenix Open

It was hard to watch Webb Simpson miss two tiny putts in round one last week, both inside two feet. He lost the tournament by two strokes and amazingly didn’t place. We lost the 3.5 points invested last week and slip to 19.99 points down on the year.

This week we have two great events to watch. The WM Phoenix Open and the Dubai Desert Classic. Two desert events that draw the crowds and capture the public’s imagination. Phoenix promises to be quite special combining the usual rowdy crowd with the return of Tiger and a Phoenix Superbowl, all over the same weekend. Dubai sees a strong field, headed by the world number one who is a very worthy favourite, Rory McIlroy.

I am at a Team Norway training camp this week so have very limited time, therefore I am going to publish just the tips without an in-depth preview.

In Dubai I think Rory is going to be very difficult to beat, I can see him putting on a show and walking away with this. He has been backed and at 4/1 I may have considered him, but at 10/3 I can’t be a backer. I also think Grillo 40/1, Wiesberger 28/1 and Willett 40/1 will go well but their strong recent form makes them a little short. The player I am going to have a small interest on is Eddie Pepperell at 66/1. He has very poor course form but this was also the case going into last week and he finished 4th. He hits it long enough to be competitive here, his ball striking appears solid all around and his short game looks very tidy, ranking 3rd in putting and 14th in scrambling. He is a decent price and looks poised to go well again.

In Phoenix I think Bubba perhaps has the best chance. He has awesome course and recent form. He is also statistically sound. I am just a little concerned where he ranks in greens in regulation and bogey avoidance, normally the strongest areas of his game. It is hard to back a 16/1 with question marks like these. I am going to play Phoenix one handed as well. I am going to give Robert Streb another go. He debuts here but is in a strong run of form. He is playing a lot better than the 66/1 offered suggests. He has played a lot of weeks in a row and burnout is a concern but this balanced against his ability and price make him a decent bet again this week.
