The Tour Championship

The BMW Championship was a disappointment but still profitable. My big price outsiders of Crane, Watson and De Jonge did very little and we had to rely on Matt Kuchar to bail us out. Unfortunately a tired and ill Kuchar 3 putted the last from short range to slip into a tie for 3rd. A tie that involved 4 people so only 3/4 of our stake counted. Kuchar won us 9.38 points, the others cost us 8 points, so we showed a whopping profit of 1.38 points taking our 2010 tally to +173.08 or £1730.80 to a £10 stake.

So this week is the last event of the Playoffs. 30 players battle out for serious bonus prize money and exemptions to a series of big events, including the first 3 Majors of 2011, the World Championship events, the CA Championship and the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic in Malaysia in October. East Lake is the venue, as it has been for 9 of the past 12 years. It is a very long course but seems to reward accuracy more than length as the greens are small and firm and need to be shot at from the fairway. Also they have had a dry spell in Atlanta and with the forecast perfect for the week the course should be playing a little shorter than normal.

Mickeslon is a worthy favourite. He is 7/1 and is a two time winner at East Lake and coming off a T8th at the BMW he has shown he is in good nick. He sits 11th in the all round ranking and certainly has the length to over power this course. However, since The Open it has been almost impossible to work out which Mickeslon is going to turn up and he does not seem to be worth the risk at the price. Paul Casey at 16/1 and Charley Hofman at a generous 66/1 are also considerations, but the course does not appear to be a 'good' fit.

Steve Stricker is the only player to finish in the top 10 in all three Playoff events. His game looks ideal for this week. 20th in driving accuracy, 2nd in the all round rankings and 9th in putting he fits the bill and the 10/1 on offer in three places seems very generous, especially when he is a general 8/1 chance.

Matt Kuchar has captured the headline the last 3 weeks for his incredible performances. Great to see from the player I have tipped in nearly every event this year. He is now inline to win the Fedex Cup and Player of the Year honours. The way he is playing at the moment means his game fits nearly every course. 11 top tens is testament to this. He ranks 8th in putting, 29th in fairways hit and still number 1 in all round ranking. He has not competed in the Tour Championship at East Lake before and is under enormous pressure (unlike Mickelson and Hoffman and everyone outside the top 5) but he has dealt with it well so far and can go well again. I would imagine he has played East Lake a number of times though as a Georgia Tech product and he will relish the Z grass fairways and Bermuda greens. Take the 11/1.

I tipped ben Crane for the BMW and he was last after two rounds but played some good stuff over the weekend. He has not played Tour Champs at East Lake since 2005 when he finished T7th, but fits the profile perfectly. 8th in fairways and and 21st in putting. He has a big chance after a much needed week off last week, 90/1 reflects his 'poor' form but represents good value in a 30 man field.
