The Heritage

A bad week last week. We lost all 11 points invested. The three picks in Malaysia all missed the cut by one, all got the wrong side of the draw. Nate Smith also missed the cut so all in a boring weekend! To add to the frustration Snedeker, who I fancied to go well, was placed. Still at 33/1 it was still the correct call not to back him. I can’t pick my nose in Europe. There is not enough info and I know nothing about the venues or half the players playing most weeks. I am going to back away a little from making token European picks unless something really stands out.

So on to The Heritage at Harbour Town. I won an event here three years ago. I love the place. It is very close to perfection like a lot of Pete Dye courses. People will look for accurate hitters and green in regulation players this week. It is a short, tight course with the smallest greens on tour. However, it has been the guys that can scramble when missing the greens that have really flourished here. I think it is a pretty good all round test, especially as the wind can blow and bad weather is forecast for Thursday and Friday. There is also reward for being over to hit a few of the tee shots right to left, especially the par 5’s.

I like Kuchar again this week. It is a big week for him after an up and down Masters week. He took last week off which is a rarity for one of the busiest golfers on tour. Kuch has made the cut in each of his six starts here and has three top 15’s including a T14 last year. He boasts six top 10’s in 9 starts this year and I expect him to be in amongst it again. 16/1 seems a fair price.

Webb Simpson has been off for two weeks after becoming a father. He also finished T14 last year and has shown good form of late, finishing tied 16th in The Shell Houston Open three weeks ago. At 50/1 he should give us a good run as he is 38th in total driving, 21st in greens hit and 20th in putting. A fairly useful combination if he could put them all together in one week!

My last pick is Chris Couch. I have put him forward a few times this year as he is always a great price for the game he poses. Mickelson has spoken about Couch having grown up with him that he is one of the best players on tour but a little lazy. When he sets his mind to it he is dangerous and this season he is finally fully fit and seems to be interested. He is 12th in total driving, 9th in putting, 11th in scoring average and 3rd in the all round ranking. It seems Mickelson has and eye for someone with a strong all round game! I do have one concern about him and that is he chips, pitches and plays bunker shots cack-handed. He is 43rd in scrambling which is fairly reassuring and with the strength of the rest of his game he is worth a go at 80/1.

My advice comes with a point system to rate the strength of a tip. A 1 point bet means placing your usual stake, so if you would consider your normal bet being £10 then a point signifies £10.

2010 record +189.33 points.
